1. The Window Hinges Have Worn Out

When a noticeable gap forms at the corner of your windows, this could be the result of your window hinges wearing out. The hinges are a key part of your windows, bearing the brunt of the constant usage. Strong winds and harsh elements can also take a toll on your windows, and even the sturdiest ones can show signs of wear and tear over time.

The Solution

The best solution would be to replace the hinges. All you need to do is measure the hinge’s length, track width, and stack height, and note the orientation of the window (either side hung or top hung). You’ll also need to determine the type of hinge you need. If you have any apprehension in this situation, your best bet is to call in a professional, who’ll be able to determine the best hinge and install it for you, using their expertise.

2. The Window Is Not Shutting Properly

Another common problem is a sagging window. Your window should fit snugly within the frame, but if you have noticed that the bottom of the panel is rubbing against the bottom of the frame and it is not opening or shutting properly, this is a clear sign that the window has sagged.

Firstly, check that you have adjustable butt hinges. Look for a small adjuster screw in the centre of the hinge, on the side attached to the window frame. With an allen key, you will be able to move the window in with clockwise turns and move the window out with counter-clockwise turns. Before you start adjusting the hinges, identify the cause of the issue. If the window is sticking, note where exactly the window is rubbing against the frame, whereas if there is a gap, note where the gaps are around the window edge.

Your goal should be to move the window sash so that it sits evenly against the window frame all around. To pull the window inwards, turn the adjuster on the hinge closest to the problem, clockwise. Turning the top hinge clockwise will pull the top of the window in, and turning the bottom hinge clockwise will pull the bottom of the window in.

If you need to pull the window outwards to stop it running on the inside edge, turn the adjuster on the hinge closest to the problem area counter-clockwise.

With small, measured adjustments to both hinges, you can move the window into the correct position.

3. The Window Is Not Locking

A uPVC window that is not locking is often caused by debris in the window tracks, a sticking mechanism, loose screws or misalignment. Where a functional window is paramount for security and peace of mind, a broken locking system will compromise this.

Firstly, remove any dirt or debris from the window tracks, frame and locking points with a brush or vacuum.

If this window is still not locking, lubricate the hinges, lock and handle. Do not use a solvent-based spray, as this can damage the parts. To check the handle, tighten any visible screws.

You may also find that the ‘keeps’ or receiver plates on the window frame are misaligned. Adjust their position so that they can better receive the locking point.
