What Is The Difference Between Grants, Schemes and Loans?

Grants, schemes and loans are all sources of funding for double-glazed windows; however, they work in different ways.

A grant is money awarded to install energy-efficient windows, which does not need to be repaid. A loan is borrowed money that must be repaid over an agreed period, and a scheme is a government programme which can include window grants, loans or payment plans.

The Warm Homes: Local Grant

The Warm Homes: Local Grant is a UK Government-funded scheme, delivered by local authorities in England to improve the energy efficiency of low-income and inefficient housing. The scheme aims to reduce fuel poverty, lower energy bills, and cut carbon emissions by upgrading poorly insulated homes to raise the property’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating to Band C where possible..
To be eligible for the scheme, the property must be in England, must be privately owned and owner-occupied or privately rented, have an EPC rating between D and G, and the residents must have a gross annual household income of £36,000 or less, live in a deprived area, or receive means-tested benefits like Universal Credit.
The best way to check your eligibility is to use the government’s free eligibility checker. If you are eligible, your application is automatically sent to your local authority. They will handle dispensing the funding and will decide whether you qualify for the scheme. Eligible homes can claim up to £15,000 for double or triple glazingg.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) Scheme

The Energy Company Obligation, or ECO4, is a UK government energy-efficiency scheme that requires larger energy suppliers to fund home improvements such as energy-efficient windows for low-income and vulnerable households.
The fourth iteration of the scheme aims to tackle fuel poverty whilst also reducing carbon emissions by placing a Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation on medium and large energy suppliers.
Therefore, obligated suppliers must promote measures to improve the ability for low-income, fuel-poor and vulnerable households to heat their homes.
To be eligible, a property must meet the minimum energy efficiency requirements of a rating of E or below. Someone living in the property must also be receiving one of the qualifying income-related benefits.
In some cases, the ECO4 scheme could pay for 100 per cent of the costs of upgrading windows; however, some homeowners may need to contribute towards the cost of the installation. As ECO4 funding is means-tested, the level of financial assistance will vary across households depending on income and benefits received.

  • Income-based
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support

What Is An EPC Rating?

Your EPC rating measures a property’s energy efficiency using a scale from A to G, where A is the most energy efficient, and G is the least.
An EPC includes the home’s overall energy-efficiency score, estimated energy costs, environmental impact information, recommendations for improving efficiency and the potential future EPC rating after improvements.
The better your home’s EPC rating, the lower the running costs and the more comfortable the place will be. A good EPC rating also makes a property more appealing to potential buyers or tenants.

How Can I Check My Home’s EPC Rating?

You can check your home’s EPC rating for free online using the GOV.UK Find an Energy Certificate service.

Enter your home’s postcode or address, or search for a certificate number, and you’ll get the current rating band, expiry date and recommended energy-saving improvements.

An EPC remains valid for 10 years, and if your home doesn’t have a valid certificate, you’ll need to hire a qualified, accredited assessor to inspect your property.

Can Double Glazing Really Help Me Save On My Heating Bills?

Yes! Double glazing can help lower your heating bills, particularly if you are upgrading from single glazing.

The main benefit of double glazing is that it can help keep rooms warm by preventing heat from escaping. That means your heating won’t need to be on as much or at as high a temperature, reducing your heating bill.

Double glazing lasts around 25-30 years, so you should save a significant amount of money over the years by choosing energy-efficient windows.
