Part L Building Regulations For Windows And Doors - What's Changing in 2026?

Read our guide here on what those changes entail.

In the UK, with the Approved Document L 2026 introducing revisions to Part L and the broader Future Homes Standard, energy efficiency moved into the spotlight as a key consideration under carbon-reduction targets and national sustainability commitments. As we are required to consider more deeply how our homes are insulated, heated and ventilated, windows and doors sit at the centre of it all.

Whilst these changes apply from 24 March 2027 for ordinary building work, and 24 September 2027 for work relating to higher-risk buildings, it is important to be informed of the changes to the Part L Building Regulations.

Why Are Regulations So Strict on Listed Status Buildings

The Building Regulations Part L set the legal standards for the conservation of fuel and power in new and existing buildings in England. Under these regulations, properties are divided into two categories, dwelling and non-dwelling, and they enforce tighter U-values, airtightness, and low-carbon heating systems to reduce carbon emissions.

How Are The Part L U-Values and Building Regulations Changing?

The Part L of the Building Regulations covers conservation of fuel and power, making homes less dependent on fossil fuels. These regulations set minimum standards for energy performance, insulation, heating, ventilation, and glazing.

In 2026, requirements for thermal efficiency across all building materials, including walls, roofs, floors, windows, and doors, will be tightened.

What Is A U-Value?

U-value is the measurement of how effectively a building material can resist heat loss. Therefore, the lower a material’s U-value is, the better its thermal insulation is. With the stricter thermal standards under the Part L changes, windows and doors must now have lower U-values. In turn, this helps homeowners reduce their energy bills and carbon footprint.

Why Are These Changes Important?

Adjusting Part L is seen as a key stepping stone towards reducing carbon by around 75-80%. This is all part of the Future Home Standard, initially introduced in 2025. These regulations are designed to improve energy efficiency and savings on energy costs, whilst also encouraging better environmental sustainability. Companies that do not adhere to these Part L regulations can face serious consequences. This can include stop work orders, legal action and also damage to their reputation.
Sash windows are the best way to upgrade period windows in many particular styles, but it’s important to note that some styles may be too unique to be matched without bespoke work.

Why Is Part L Compliance So Important?

Ensuring that your home is Part L compliant will: Reduce heat loss, keeping your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Lower your energy bills thanks to improved efficiency and help you to achieve improved sustainability goals, whilst also supporting the UK’s net zero targets and also ensure compliance with local authority building controls to avoid costly delays.

Do The Part L Changes Apply To Existing Homes?

These changes mainly apply to new dwellings. Therefore, changes to Building Regulations Part L do not mean you have to upgrade your existing property. You won’t be forced to upgrade an existing house, and the regulations only apply when specific building work or renovations are carried out. Alterations are strictly regulated. Part L applies to existing homes when:
  • Building a new house extension.
  • Replacing or renovating a major element.
  • Replacing windows and doors.
  • Converting a garage, barn or loft into a habitable space.
